Entitled SIL Steals Puppy Name For Baby, Asks Sis To Pick Different Name For Puppy

Before we even get started on this, we want to talk a little about people's entitlement towards names. To be clear, no one person owns a name, or has special rights to a name. Names for babies and pets are completely fair game. You have some babies with very simple names, and some doggos with very intricate and complex names, it's about about parental preference.

Keeping this in mind, OP had picked out her puppy's name long before she discovered that her SIL was pregnant. And when SIL was asked what the baby's name would be, OP discovered that her brother an SIL had chosen none other but the name that she had already chosen for her puppy. And it's not like they didn't know, OP reveals that she told her brother and SIL about her puppy's name long before there was a baby involved. Sighs, nothing like some good old fashioned family drama.

    Font - Fast forward and my SIL is pregnant and finds out it is a girl. We are all so excited and happy and wondering about the name and she said Maybeline. I didn't really think much of it at the spot but I did make a comment about how that is what my puppy will be called.     Sure, SIL is the one having the human baby, but OP has had this name picked out for her puppy for months. MONTHS. Months ago SIL was not even pregnant.

    Organism - Ultimately I didnt change the name and my dog is now called Maybeline. When I told my family everyone was so angry with me saying I was being rude and insulting my brother and my niece. I had planned this name before my niece was even conceived. I am not going to change it but am I being an asshole about it?

    Font - update: so we came up with a solution! I will call my dog may for short as a nickname while keeping Maybeline as her registered name. Also I am not allowed to tell everyone their daughter is named after my dog. Its a bit of a dumb agreement because British people will shorten the shortest of names. Your name is James?     Font - Signature-Disastrous · 1d NTA. I mean, realistically the dog's name doesn't affect the kid's name. Whatever name you pick for your kid, there could always be a dog with that name. Nobody is going to get the dog and the kid confused. Just tell then politely that the dog was already named when you made the agreement with the breeder and you aren't going to change your dog's name.
